Yes, that is the suffocating sensation that we all are feeling…. this is what we feel as dancers, singers, actors and artists…dance is isolated from music and music from poetry! Drama is a separate entity while sculptures in temples are just that...Sculptures!! Although we pride ourselves on our Natyashastra and other texts, nothing in it is used in practice. In its simplest and most elegant form, Natyashastra combined the arts of poetry, dance, music, drama and even arts such as architecture, sculpture and painting in its integral vision of art expressions as vehicles of beauty
We are increasingly divorcing from inherently connected art forms to a point that we lack even the most basic education or awareness in any other form, while we claim to specialize in one particular art form! Better yet, we dissect each art form into manageable bits and teach them to the next generation without giving them the bigger and more meaningful picture and are successfully defeating the purpose of the art itself!
The need of the hour is to bring back the good old interconnected dialogue between art forms and artists. Interdisciplinary communication and interaction should be encouraged and that will put some restraint, hopefully, on the festering, nonsensical and exhausting scenarios we see in art today.
Art can happen anywhere is an initiative to work towards that goal of combining various art forms and creating platforms where productive interaction takes place. We would like to work towards that goal, particularly with younger generation and kids.Won't you join us?
